A.S. King's work always has a unique story. I thought it was going one way and it shook me off track twice. It's a good read although, as usual, I don't know why the voice actor has to use racialized voices for the role of the Vietnamese character. Listening to the audiobook, if King wrote it this way... This book got a lot more problematic.

A really interesting read, some of the better young adult realistic fiction I've read in a while. The protagonist is a little depressing in the middle of the book, but it really picks up at the end with an inspiring finish. Highly recommended.

A very clever book about bullying, this story centres on the character of Lucky Linderman, who is anything but lucky. Tormented by the same aggressively evil boy since he was seven years old, grade nine Lucky has reached a boiling point. Seeing everyone around him bow to the bully, including his parents, supposed friends and teachers, a single event finally catapults his mom to take him out of state for a couple of weeks. Told in various time frames, the experiences of Lucky are revealed through his dreams with his MIA Vietnam solider-grandfather and flashbacks.

Astonishingly good. I've been a fan of A.S. King's work since her first book, and this one is the best yet. Lucky's voice is incredibly authentic, and I'm so glad his story is being told. Plus, it's partially set in Tempe & includes a shout out to the Vagina Monologues!

4.5 stars. This was amazing. It was dark and funny and an overall very satisfying read. Lucky was a witty and lovable character, and the story was nicely built.

Before reading this, despite all of the reviews I had seen before, I was only warned that it mentioned bullying, abuse and suicide. If you read this, though, I'd like to add a massive trigger warning for sexual assault. I was not expecting any in this book and if you, like me, are sensitive to that topic, I understand you'd need to know in advance. I would have preferred to know. This has nothing to do with my rating of the book at all, I'm just giving a warning to help a reader out.

It's a very great and definitely memorable book. I wasn't disappointed. I fully recommend it.

It's one of those books I hesitate to recommend, but quite enjoyed myself, you know?
