I had just stumbled across this in my collection and decided to give it a read. Wow! I was enthralled from the get-go and I love the way the perspective shifts in the story. Who is this guy in the desert and what does he want? I added this to my disappear-book shelf because that's just what happens when you read it: you disappear into the story and writing!

the renegade, or a confused mind > the guest > the voiceless > jonas, or the artist at work > the growing stone > the adulterous wife.
half the endings felt unsatisfying/ i don’t understand them

This book reminds me why I love short stories. Exile and the Kingdom is a beautiful example of how we can explore different themes of humanity through seemingly disconnected stories. Camus explores a longing for freedom, abandonment, existential confusion, alienation from society, morality, isolation and exile. They all intertwine seamlessly together.

Each story uses the physical world so beautifully--from a desert landscape to an artists apartment--and each character is at odds with his/her surroundings and purposes. Masterful.
