I really enjoyed this. I liked the backstory of Clark, and I can't wait to get into Rainbow Six and read more.

Solid entry, though missing Jack Ryan

I saw this was the first in the series and wanted to give a try. Enjoyable, especially the sailing scenes and the strong backstory the characters get. Clancy writes a long book, but it also is a thorough one, with character, pace and drive.

Clearing my shelves of books about to sell/donate, I came across this which I remember purchasing at a yard sale for $1 in the 90s, but never read. What a mess. A terrible premise that is a prequel for the character of "Clark" who in this goes on a rampage against drug dealers who kill a woman he had literally JUST MET and suddenly took upon himself to help cure her of a drug addiction along with a pair of doctors and a nurse he also JUST MET (and who work at one of the top hospitals in the U.S. yet seem to offer their services for free! Why? Because they like this guy of course. D'uh). This is all juxtaposed with Clark's first incursion with the CIA, trying to rescue some fallen flyers from behind North Vietnamese lines (the war is still raging on in this book).

Such an overlong mess of a book. Thankfully Clancy books are a straightforward read, and I zoomed through the 600+ (why is it so long??) in a couple of hours.

Clancy's novel introducing early years of John Clark. Returnee from the Navy, Clark, Vietnam war veteran tries to live normal life when he comes across a lady in distress. After failing to save her life Clark decides to start hunting those responsible (very much like Creasy from A.J. Quinnell series of novels).[return]In the meantime US government will try to recruit him once more to lead a daring mission to save US POWs (Son Tay like raid).[return][return]Recommended.

Maybe this illuminates some of the darkness in my own heart, but I could hardly put this book down until I finished it. Without Remorse is a who-dunnit with amazing action-adventure, well-written characters, and often dark psychological drama. It showcases John Kelly, the Vietnam vet and Special Forces legend who by the end of the novel becomes John Clark, CIA superspy. If you like the Jason Bourne novels, this is another in that vein, and one you won't be able to put down.
