Not as good as the first. But interesting plot. Great to listen to when doing chores.

Awesome second in the Origin series. We finally find out some critical information about what’s happening. Can’t wait to find out what happens with Luc and Evie. I heard book 3 is the last one because the author couldn’t write the ending after losing someone to COVID. I hope #3 died t end in a cliff hanger.

First and foremost, if you plan on reading Jennifer Armentrout’s Lux series and haven’t yet, that you read that series first as there are major spoilers for it in Armentrout’s Origin series (of which this book is the second book in). I’m not a fan of spoilers myself, so I always try to give others a heads up about them when I can! Also, if you haven’t read my review for the first book in the Origin series, The Darkest Star, you can do so here.
I made my way through the Lux series pretty quickly once I dove into the first book. I was hooked and almost instantly invested in the happiness and wellbeing of the main characters.
Now that I’ve read The Burning Shadow and am two books into the Origin series, which is a spinoff/continuation of the Lux series, I can say with certainty that...

All the stars in the universe!! If the first book was a 4.5 stars read and I said it didn’t quite measure up to the original series, the Burning Shadow went above and beyond. I loved every single moment and this book was packed with action, romance and a plot that had me glued to the pages. I am now itching to get my hands onto the next!!!!

I received this book for free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Evie and the gang are back in this surprisingly enjoyable sequel to The Darkest Star.
My first vacation in three years (count them people – THREE years) deserved a good book, and, lucky for me, The Burning Shadow lived up to my desires. It was the perfect amount of romance, action, and world development. Whereas I felt the relationship between Luc and Evie toxic in the first book, this novel attempted to create a balance between the two. Considering this novel puts their relationship center stage, it needed to create a healthier dynamic between them.
Characters may take center stage in the first half of the novel, but the plot moves forward rapidly in the second half. Perhaps a little too fast? I felt a bit of whiplash from all the twists and turns. It ends on a cliffhanger that has me eager to read the next installment. Those looking for familiar faces from the previous series will be pleasantly surprised.
tl;dr A healthier dynamic is established between Luc and Evie, making me enjoy this novel more than the previous one.

This book killed me. JLA has done it again.
I'm usually good at figuring out plot twists before they happen but not this time and wow this book had a lot of great twists.
I'm so glad everyone was as confused and lost as Evie in this book. In the darkest star everyone (including me, thanks to the lux series) knew everything and no one would explain things to Evie and that frustrated me a lot.
Evie and Luc are amazing characters. I just loved seeing them get to know each other (or remember each other).
Also I love that we got to see so many characters from the previous series. I miss them so much I might re-read the lux series again (this would be the third time).

Armentrout continues Luc's story in this book. I love Luc and Evie together, but this book was a roller coaster of revelations that takes the reader up and down in emotions. To me that is always a sign of a great book. The action in this novel keeps the reader going wanting to know what will happen next and what will be revealed. The ending of this book primes the reader for book 3 (like you will want to have it in your hands immediately). I love the Lux series and I really recommend this spin off of the series with Origin. I recommend that you read the Lux series first but be warned you will have a hard time deciding which characters you love the most.
