Some genuinely frightening and rifting imagery. The ending tore my heart out.

While definitely not for the faint of heart, this is well done in many ways. So richly textured and atmospheric. It is more setting- than character-driven, evoking the desert southwest with more attention to landscape detail than I expected from a horror book. Also, the author manages to nail the ending: it’s pitch-perfect.

I am a seasoned horror reader at this point, and Cutter’s work strikes chords that are hard to match or find similarly from other writers. Of all his work I’ve read (which is nearly everything under this pen name at least), Little Heaven was far and away my favorite and the most unnerving. I don’t scare easily - and this book horrified me.

Three words: warm blister broth. The first third of this was a 5-star book. The middle third: 4 stars. Last third: 2 stars. Basically three decent novellas padded with excessive amounts of body horror and some of the nastiest imagery I’ve ever read. I don’t think I’ve spent 200 pages reading with a stank face before, but this was gross as hell. However — it did give me my new go-to phrase for canceling plans: “I would come myself but my tubercular state has rendered me inert.”

This was the happiest ending I’ve seen in a Nick Cutter book. That’s not to say this book had a happy ending at all, far from it actually. Just the least dread—filled ending. 5/5

This one takes its time building to the scares, but just over halfway though it hits hard. So plenty of Cutter's gruesome descriptions are still here and the plot is pretty good with the multiple POVs. If you love Nick Cutter then give this a read.
