While definitely not for the faint of heart, this is well done in many ways. So richly textured and atmospheric. It is more setting- than character-driven, evoking the desert southwest with more attention to landscape detail than I expected from a horror book. Also, the author manages to nail the ending: it’s pitch-perfect.
