A slice of life story that romanticizes the mundane and highlights parts of the character’s personalities that we can all relate to in a way only Sally Rooney can achieve. This book was relatable, sweet, sad, hopeful, informative, and cheeky at times. The audiobook was excellent, too.

Overall an okay book, not terrible, not great but I had fun reading it.

For most of the book there wasn't an engaging plot or any plot at all, just reading about the characters thoughts with little to no character development.
Some moments were relatable and in others I just wanted to scream at the characters to stop making stupid decisions.
However, the writing style was beautiful and the characters interesting enough to make me keep reading.

this is definitely my favorite sally rooney book i've read so far, but i think i just need to accept that her writing is not really for me. my best description of this book would be it's very "grey", the overall vibe is gloomy and ultimately a bit depressing. reading this in the middle of winter was not the best decision i ever made in my life. however, i did find the characters very intriguing and authentic, which is the case for a lot of sally rooney books, and the plot was really driven by them. the ending to me was unsatisfying and the overall vibe was a bit strange, but again, it may just be because these books aren't my favorite.

This book invites us into the internal lives of two women in their late 20s who are struggling to find meaning and dealing with the delicate dynamics of friendship and love. It asks: how do we lead happy personal lives in the knowledge of suffering and injustice? how do
we conjure up meaning and
drive?

Mundane material decisions/events, profound abstract worries/discussions. Like any dinner-table chat that ping-pongs between the two, it may read as pretentious and tedious to some but earnest, real, and necessary to others. I belong to the latter camp.

I always adore Rooney’s books so perhaps I’m a tad biased- but I just love the way she writes! I think of her novels as literary analyses of the modern human psyche, demonstrations of universal dysfunction in social relationships, and of course glimpses into the melancholy yet beautifully normal day-to-day lives of ordinary Irish folk. The book contains sex scenes and sexual conversation, though none of it incredibly graphic; rather, I find that the emotional subtext of that theme is much more the focus.  The characters take some time to become “loveable,” but they are certainly relatable, affectionately flawed, and authentic. I definitely found myself caring for and about the main characters by the end.

I didn’t really start to get invested into the characters until about 60% in. I listened on audiobook and it was hard to differentiate the characters at first. The style is very similar to her other novel, Normal People. Lots of pining, miscommunication and unwillingness to commit. The author touched on some really deep topics. Towards the end I started to fully see the characters and found myself rooting for them. She does a wonderful job writing beautifully complex characters who you find annoying but can’t help but also love.
