I read this to my class of 7-8 year olds.
The first three chapters are lovely then it derails. What on Earth was Ted Hughes on when he wrote that ending?

A fabulous read, ideal for exploring and discussing. I loved the imagery in the story and how the writer creates your own response to the characters. Can't believe I haven't read this sooner!

2022 Reading Challenge #21: A Book Under 100 Pages Long
2022 Goodreads Challenge: #23/20
Finished this in one hour and it felt like a fever dream. I think this may be the first book where I enjoyed the movie more? But I appreciate both. The movie was always a childhood classic and when I found out that it was based on a children's book, I instantly purchased it. However, the film's writers deeeefinitely took some creative liberties with the movie as the two are nearly unrelatable, other than their central themes for the most part. Peace is peace. Still enjoyed the Iron Giant and his battle against the space dragon, though. 3.5/5 stars.
Also, just connected the two dots that Ted Hughes, the writer that spawned one of the BEST children's films, was married to THE Sylvia Plath. Amazing.

Nice quick read; fantastical to the point of ridiculousness. Love that for Ted.

Really cute but I just wondering why there was a giant dragon? I wish it focused more on hogarth and the iron man's relationship
Really good for kids tho! Although it doesnt teach much it does have a good hook and the movie might traumatize the kid forever, although the movie is really really good!!

I think I might have read this before, not sure but it's certainly familiar (the film version is excellent though obviously quite different).
There's some lovely language and great imagery as the initial sci-fi aspect merges to a fairy tale mythology that introduces the brilliant space-bat-angel-dragon and a charming plea for peace and harmony.
I wasn't a big fan of the illustrations from Laura Carlin though they work well in the book with some great layouts. A good fairy tale for younger readers.
