Ah yes my autobiography, and an enjoyable primer to Edith Wharton's critique of New York society. I spotted Van Der Leyden and Mingott names which makes me suspect that there's a shared universe going on here.

Emotional, well written novella. I picked this up as I recalled a old B&W movie that I think was this story (in fact I am sure it was, as the end is the same), but that film was a tad more melodramatic than this lovely, affecting, emotional character study of two female cousins who both share the same daughter, one by birth and the other by adoption.
The prose is thoughtful, eloquent and insightful.
The narrator remained measured, never succumbing to a melodramatic flair (which this story, set in the 1850s, but published in the 1920s - could have easily tempted another narrator).

I find it virtually impossible to not be enchanted by everything she writes.

Classic Edith Wharton. If you are familiar with her other works, this will be no surprise. In fact, you will literally know some of the supporting characters. There are the vivid descriptions of society life, the biting social commentary, the repressed and oppressed women, but somehow this fell a little flat for me. Perhaps it's that one of the main characters is just so unpleasant, I don't know. I understand that I'm to have sympathy for her position, but the fine balance of motivation and behavior just didn't hit the mark for me. Maybe the short format limited or rushed some activity. I usually do love her work, but this wasn't my favorite.
