This was so good! I loved all of the characters, as well as the world that Anne Bishop created. This series just got added to my all time favorites list and I can't wait to pick up the next one!

This book has been on my To Read for years and it checked off the 2025 PS category of "a book about a found family', so I finally read it. I will say I almost DNF'd it, but didn't have anything else ready to read yet, so I pushed through. It's great that writers will create their own fantasy worlds, but when you have stupid names for places that currently exist (Sparkletown. Really?!), it gets annoying.
When there are also stupid, vapid characters, like Asia, it's also very annoying. Fortunately, the farther along we go in the book, the less of her we get, until it's needed. I did enjoy ALL the different "mythical" characters in this (were-wolves/bears/coyotes/hawks/crows, vampires, seasons) and they all had different personalities, but it did start to annoy me with humans always being referred to as either meat or monkeys. I am satisfied with how it ended, but not sure if I would read any farther in the series.

Its been quiet sometime since I read a good urban fantasy so I thoroughly enjoyed this book the minute I got it and could not put it down! *sigh* I can't wait to get the next books in the series. I happily recommend this to anyone interested in a great urban fantasy book!

While the story was entertaining and there were interesting characters, the intro “history of the world” ruins it. This book is considered paranormal, and it’s set in an alternate USA where European colonizers got to the Americas and ran into vampires, werewolves, etc. The structure of the world is different enough to not be rooted in our historical understanding of this is America, this is the Atlantic, these are Europeans BUT she chooses to erase all indigenous people instead. It’s lazy world building and racist.

Urban Fantasy that is not about a main character who is a Investigator of any type? Check.
Compelling characters that you feel for? Check
Sparkly Vampires? Nope!
It was good stuff, can't wait to read the next book!

I loved this book and series so much I don't think any review I write can truly do it justice.
Anne Bishop creates a world where there are 2 different species that are in the world. The Terre Indigene, and humans. Only twist is that the terre indigene were always there first, and humans were always at their mercy.
In the time of colonization, humans were just killed off until they found something they could trade for survival. Now the terre indigene and humans coexist, kind of.
Meg is a rare type of human, but finds herself immersed with the terre indigene, becoming "their Meg". As a blood prophet, her life is limited because of her addiction to cutting, and he cuts have been used for someone else's profit all her life.
With witty and downright funny dialogue, this story is still very serious and action filled. There is so much going on seamlessly and naturally. You can see the characters growing due to Meg's influence as you read.
I give up, it is awesome, READ IT.
some quotes I liked.
Folding her arms, she stared out the side window and muttered, "Bad Wolf." His only response was to burst out laughing.
One way or another, he was going to make sure she got more exercise - even if he had to chase her like a bunny.

The start and the end were excellent and really hooked me in, some parts were cheesy but still feel great as part of the story. The middle two quarters of the book were a push to get through. Not sure if I will tackle the next two books in the series.
