I really liked the characters and the magic in this book, the first in a series. It was a departure from the typical fantasy gimmicks and was refreshingly different.

An enjoyable reread. Forgot how fun this series was!

Entertaining book with good enough characters but it lacks charm and sometimes is way too boring that it should be.

listened to this one on audio and the reader’s voice took some getting used to. he’s very british and everything he says sounds as though he’s about to break up laughing. a twist on the usual genie-in-a-bottle story from a young djinn’s perspective. didn’t love it, but i liked it ok.

I bought this book for my niece and started reading it on the train ride home; by the time I reached my stop I was hooked, and had to order another copy. I enjoyed it quite a bit, though the ending went on a bit too long for my taste (too many dramatic climaxes). Now on to some grown-up books...

Obwohl es ein Kinderbuch ist und es mir eigentlich auch ziemlich gut gefallen hat, würde ich es niemals einem Kind empfehlen. Die Gründe hierfür sind zum einen, dass es sehr viele (unnötige) Klischees über verschiedene Nationalitäten enthält, die ich nicht unbedingt an Kinder weitergeben wollen würde, und zum anderen, dass im Buch meiner Meinung nach Rauchen verharmlost wird, indem die Dschinn ständig rauchend dargestellt werden und selbst die Kinder Lust dazu haben. Zwar wird einmal kurz gesagt, dass Rauchen für Dschinn im Gegensatz zu normalen Menschen ungefährlich ist, da sie aus Feuer bestehen und der Rauch sie stärken oder beruhigen kann, aber meiner Meinung nach ist dieses Motiv unglücklich gewählt und auf jeden Fall vermeidbar.
Im ersten Band der "Die Kinder des Dschinn"-Reihe führt gut in die Geschichte ein, lässt sich schnell und flüssig lesen und macht Lust auf mehr. Leider hat mir ein bisschen Spannung gefehlt. Das hätte man eindeutig besser machen können. Außerdem gab es ein paar Fehler in der Logik, worüber man aber hinwegsehen kann.
Alles in allem ist das Buch in Ordnung und gut, wenn man mal leichte Unterhaltung möchte.

It was a fun read, aber irgendwie ist es zu modernen Zeiten etwas seltsam, dass es so viel um die ägyptische bzw arabische „Kultur“ geht und die Charaktere irgendwie weiß sind, idk — alas, respectfully written as far as I can tell und trotzdem unterhaltsam!

It feels up the child inside me. If you want a loves me tale with its oh so classic retailing if a history if some sry then this is for you. I honestly never though I would read this book in a day in my life because I always saw it in the library but I never took it for a book worth reading g, but when I did I regretted how I first felt about it because I ended up loving it.

The book, inspired clearly by Harry Potter if not Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson books, was ok. The two protagonists, a set of twins who discover that they are djinn with magical powers, felt cookie cutter and never really seemed to break out of the mold.

To make things worse, there were a fair number of xenophobic comments spread throughout the book, the French receiving a good number of shots (hygiene being the number one thing attacked) though Egyptians were not far behind.

Coming at the book with adult sensibilities, I was clearly more sensitive than my 10 year old daughter who just breezed by these blissfully unaware.

That said, the combination of fairly mediocre writing and near-bigotry (or to be generous just poorly honed humor) was tough to get past. The final straw was the author, who is quite prolific and this is nowhere near his first, or even tenth, book made a mess of the pacing. A major new villain was introduced in the last few chapters and dealing with them felt hurried and poorly executed, neatly solved by a little deus ex machina.

Nowhere near the worst book I've ever read, hence a non-one star rating, it was bad enough that I have no interest in reading the rest of the series.

Iblis yang memimpin suku Jin Jahat (Ifrit, Ghul, dan si'la) mencoba menemukan tempat tersegelnya para jin itu.

Untuk menghentikannya, Phil, John, Nimrod, dan dibantu Mr. Groanin serta Mr. Rakshahas berangkat ke Mesir. Kekuatan serta dunia yang baru dikenal menjanjikan petualangan yang berbahaya bagi kedua anak itu. Mereka belajar untuk mengatasi permasalahan dengan bekerja sama serta memutar otak mereka.

Yang menarik dari buku ini adalah cara para Jin menjelaskan asal kekuatan mereka. Kekuatan tersebut bersumber dari api dalam diri mereka. Api tersebut hampir sama dengan nyawa bagi jin, sehingga terlalu banyak menggunakan kekuatan dapat menurangi umur hidup mereka. selain itu, Nimrod menggunakan ilmu fisika (yang sulit dipahami) untuk menjelaskan berbagai hal, misalnya, mereka tidak begitu saja memunculkan benda dari ketiadaan, tetapi mereka mengubah molekul udara untuk menjadi zat yang akan menyusun benda yang diinginkan. Karena itu, apa yang mereka lakukan (mengabulkan permintaan) tidak bisa disebut sihir (Karena itu pula saya tidak memasukkan buku ini dalam rak fairies-and-magic :D).

Sayangnya permasalahan yang mereka hadapi cenderung dangkal dan langsung dapat terselesaikan... meski di bab selanjutnya tiba-tiba timbul masalah lain.
