Wtf.
I had been really excited to read this book since I enjoyed the movie but it was a really disappointing experience. This book is heavily over-descriptive making it extremely exhausting to read and yet I feel like I left knowing less about the story then before I picked this up.
Honestly, just go watch the movie.

This is a beautiful yet disturbing coming of age story about a girl who's faced with so much pain and trauma along her way it becomes too much for her to bare.

Jade Song managed to depict Rens thoughts perfectly, leaving you entirely grossed out while emphasizing with her. The way Jade Song really managed to capture Rens obsession is incredible, her writing is phenomenal. You really understood why Ren had to do the things she did even if they may seem totally unbelievable and insane.

The horror really comes with the bluntness of the writing style. Jade Song did not hold back when it came to describing the sexual abuse and pressure put on young athletes, especially female ones. While the metamorphosis may seem to be the scariest part about this story at first, it really ended up being all those little things Ren faced daily that made this truly horrific. Everything she went through can and has happened in the real world wich lead to creeping me out in a way a book never accomplished before.

Additionally the inclusiveness in this book is really nice as well. Including sapphic desires as well as a nonbinary character.

The only thing I could criticize about this book is the ending. Don't get me wrong, the ending was beautiful and fitted the story. However it was pretty much an open ending and I just found myself being left with too many questions, desperately wanting to know more, so that it couldn't satisfy me entirely.

Please read this. It's not only a perfect horror book that's a lot of fun to read. It contains so many important topics and messages, especially about society putting to much pressure on girls and their body's. I truly believe everyone can find something beautiful for themselves withing the horror. Needless to say that I don't think you can read this and not empathize with Ren.

The idea of the story was very cute. The separate storys themselves, okay.
I think it would have worked better if we had followed one character instead of 4 different ones bc like this we knew nothing about them and therefore I also couldn't really care about their tragic events that led them to wanting to go back to the best.
