I'm so glad she contextualized the timing right away in the introduction, sharing that it was (presumably early) spring of 2019 at the moment she was writing, because while the content is still relevant it's also so very of its moment.

3.5 rounding up for the settings, concepts, and great rep! (The moment when she has 15 students in the AP Chem class, though, I was like... is this a rural school thing?? I'm into it but how can they afford multiple sections?!?)

Also, I'm going to take the bowling team more seriously from now on!

I loved Tales as a high schooler in the 90s whose only other queer book options were Annie On My Mind and Rubyfruit Jungle... good grief, I hope those hold up better than Maupin. This latest installment feels so hopelessly dated and squicky. How many times can an editor NOT say "let's not describe your nameless Roma characters as sloe-eyed?" TOO MANY. Even the "thanks for letting me crash at your fancy house, famous old white gay men!" acknowledgements page was cringe af.

Cute! A sweet, light, funny paranormal grumpy-sunshine romp.

This book deserves at least four stars but it's hard to say it's for me - atmospheric, oppressive dread, sexual and domestic violence, violent murder. But if you like character driven crime novels (or nf) this is likely for you. Meticulously drawn setting, so that the land and town themselves are major characters.

5 stars for being an EXCELLENT book to fall asleep to. 4.5 for the ongoing anthropomorphizing.

Gosh, what a time capsule! A noir detective/urban fantasy that's as much of its time as the descriptions of pioneer square and an affordable steak in Seattle.
