Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

“He is not a bad man, and that, I realize suddenly, is the root of my hurt.”
i’ve never been a huge fan of short stories, but these definitively changed my mind. another one of the books i got for christmas, i wasn’t sure what to expect from this one since i had never heard of it before.
i’ll be the last to admit, that at times, i was beyond confused as to what was happening. in particular, the SVU episode mock-ups really confused me, but after reading summaries and explanations online, the premise of this book became a lot more clear to me.
i can’t state my thoughts on this book any better than this article, so i’m stealing it; “…That’s the problem, isn’t it? A woman’s body never exists in isolation. There is always her body, and there are also always all those other parties who believe they are entitled to it.”

jesus christ. this book took me 4 months to read. not because it was long, or because i didn’t want it to end, but it was a pain to read. i had to force myself to finish this damn book. i got it as a gift for christmas (?) one year, and i was running out of things to read so i decided to finally read this one. i regret this choice. if you like stranger things, and you’re a middle schooler, maybe you’ll like this! but if you are an avid reader who just so happens to also be a fan of the show, you’re not gonna enjoy this one. i promise you.

i LOVED this book so much! it’s not AS good as the second one in my opinion, but i think that’s because the second one just makes me think of me and my girlfriend more. definitely worth a read.

you’re telling me… 97% of the population is female… and there ain’t one damn lesbian in the entire story? what kind of bullshit is that!

“‘My mom says Meg’s the lucky one,’ he said. ‘My mom says she got off easy.’”
I wanted to read something disturbing. I wanted to read a good, horrid, teeth-grinding tale. I found this book on the bottom level of a horror book iceberg, and I doubted it could be that bad. They’re just words - it wasn’t even a visual like a movie. I had teared up at books in the past, felt some real emotions, but that had been when I was younger and looking back most of it was just sappy stuff that didn’t really warrant such a reaction.
But this? This book… is something else entirely. I don’t want to spoil a single thing in this book. The best, most heartbreaking way to experience this is going in blind. So, I’m not going to tell you anything. This book isn’t for everyone - but if you can withstand hard books, you need to read this. It’s a horrific and beautiful work of horror.
“But the children are not fine. They will never be.”

usually i like to write well-developed and thought out reviews, but i’m so *not* in the mental space for that right now, so i’m just leaving it at this; gay as hell and i loved it!

i once read this book back in middle school, and since then it has sat on my shelf for years. i remembered loving it, and remembered the vague details, but i couldn’t fully retell the story. that’s why i recently reread this book for the first time in years, and i’m so glad i did. this book is beautiful. it’s a tale of hardships and love, homelessness and trauma, the wanting of a better life against all odds. i can’t relate to a single thing in this book. i grew up in a different time period, in a different tax bracket, and with not anywhere near the level of danger that the Walls family had. and yet, i love it. i think that’s why i love it so much. this story is so outrageous and over the top that sometimes you forget it’s a memoir. i can’t recommend it enough.

“They say it's just a poem, that it doesn't mean a thing, but how can it be just a poem, with all the heart it brings.
They say it's just some words written on a page with a pen, but isn't it beautiful, the way it can feel a little like a friend?”
I received this book from a regular at my coffee shop after I told her I had broken up with my girlfriend. I was at such a low point and she noticed it. She said she couldn’t stop thinking about me and had to get me this book. She will never know it, but that small gesture, when it seemed the whole world was crashing in on me, helped save my life. It reminded me that there is good in this world, and I have to remain to be a part of it.
To Suzanne,
thank you.
