The Returned by Jason Mott

I'm an atheist, so I really had to suspend disbelief when reading this novel, for reasons that should be obvious very early on. People long dead returning to life? In different locations? And they're now alive? Weren't they EMBALMED? Perhaps a miracle like that would be more believable to someone more spiritual than I. I'm sure it would, with all of the religious and spiritual references.
I am however quite open-minded, and despite its far-fetched premise, the writing was solid. The characters rich and believable. Writing so smooth and comfortable, that I hungrily gobbled up the novel in the span of mere days.
This is not a zombie book. Which is unfortunate, actually, because a zombie apocalypse is more believable than what happens in this novel. This is a book I'm glad I read, and one that I will not quickly forget.
Point off for the ridiculousness of the plot.

While still an excellent book, this much anticipated (by me!) follow-up lacked the magic of the first novel, which had me both laughing and crying quite hysterically. Still, a must-read for any dog lover.

I have never read or heard about the blog by the same name that made the author famous, but decided to take a gamble after reading the glowing reviews. I’m not generally a huge fan of memoirs, and I really do not dig books with illustrations (even good illustrations!), but I adored this one. Especially the chapters about her dogs, which had me laughing out loud. If you have a dog, particularly a dumb dog, you should read this. If you’ve ever experienced hopeless depression that no one around you can relate to, you should read this. If you’ve ever been attacked or had your home invaded by a goose, you definitely should read this.
HOWEVER – I went to the author’s blog after having read this novel, and it seems that a lot of the chapters in this book are from her blog. Fans of the blog may want to read reviews from other fans before buying the book.
