A solid middle grade read. Loved the supernatural and magical elements. Loved the family connection and importance placed on family, friends, and community as well.

This was excellent. I'm not the biggest on poetry, but I've been trying to read/listen to more.
The audiobook narrator was also very good. I'll be looking for more from both the author and the narrator.

A good starting place for kids and young adults who want to know more about the racism Black Americans experience and their struggles they still have in the U.S. due to it.

I started trying to read the physical book, couldn't get into it, and put it on pause until I could check out the audiobook from my library. Much easier to get into through the audio.
Generally liked the story although some parts were a little slow. Liked the characters and the diversity. Liked the discussion on various social issues (mainly feminism) although the discussion of racial inequality was brief (one line did really stand out touching on racial inequality about how when people crack down on "crime"/"degeneracy" it affects Black people the most every time).
My main critique is that the music used in the audiobook could be too loud, and made it difficult to listen to the narration/story during those parts. I liked the vibe the music brought to the story, it fit into the story nicely, but the volume of the music to the narrator really detracted from the story for me especially since they music wasn't necessary to the story (it was a nice bonus sort of feature to the audio but it wasn't necessary and I would've preferred forgoing it entirely so I could've had an easier time hearing the actual story). Would be good for future of making audiobooks more accessible to be mindful of the volume levels of any music or noise/sound effects that are added to the book.

Not my fave but not terrible. Decent enough of a listen on audio when I didn't know what else I wanted to read but wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

Enjoyed this look into a man who was part of one of the last groups stolen from Africa to be a slave in the US. It was also heartbreaking and infuriating. Super quick too.

This overall wasn't for me. It felt like a whole lot of nothing happening. I think there were interesting aspects of it and the characters were okay but I wasn't invested much until more towards the middle-end of it. It didn't hold my interest very well, but I did finish it.

Pretty decent. Def understand the comparisons to Good Omens as it has a similar vibe although a different storyline. Liked this better than Good Omens tho.
Didn't quite like the kind of se**al as***lt situation and then that being used against the person later on tho. Also def think this could've been cut down because the audiobook was approx 18 hrs give or take.
Liked the characters overall tho and liked the story overall as well. Not my favorite book but it was a decent one to pass some time.

Holy crap this was so good. I picked it up on a whim and will def read more from the author. Lots of diverse representation which is great. There is a lot of violence, gore, and religious bigotry plus other things so please read trigger/content warnings. It wasn't the greatest idea to read it during a very uncertain time in the u.s. where this world could be very real here tho.

Decent enough. Pretty slow to start but built quite nicely.
