Best of the Hodges books. Although not a real return to horror, at least it is more than a detective story. The best bit is the way how King builds up the story of Hodges' fate here. Makes me think that one day there will be no more new King books. Shudder.

Over the last five years I've really come to love Stephen King novels. Whether it's The Stand, 11-22-63 or Under the Dome, I've found him to be one of the better writers around today. However, the one exception of that for me has been this trilogy, the Bill Hodges trilogy.
The trilogy started out with Mr Mercedes, a book that now a couple of days after the horrific deaths of 70+ people in Nice, France makes the concept of that novel even more haunting. Needless to say I didn't like that book at it, it felt formulaic and lacked King's normal powerful punch. The second novel Finder's Keepers was a far better novel. The characters were more defined, the villain (although the same in all three books) was more well thought out, and quite frankly the entire novel was far more interesting.
That leaves us with End of Watch the third and final novel in the trilogy, and by far the worst of the bunch. End of Watch goes completely off the rails in every category. First and foremost there's a time constraint on how quickly the case needs to be solved because of a medical condition for our protagonist. If that wasn't bad enough Stephen King decides to throw in super natural powers into the third book that completely turned me off.
I remember after finishing Mr. Mercedes that I was shocked to find out that this was a trilogy, and now having finished it I can say that my shock has not subsided. There was no need for three books. These characters didn't warrant it. The plots didn't warrant it. Nothing about this trilogy was new or interesting or memorable.

Predictable plot, a lot of repetition. My least favorite of the bill Hodges trilogy

This book was the perfect conclusion to the Bill Hodges Trilogy and amped up the mysticism just enough to blow my mind, while still feeling totally believable. I was glad to see the return of Brady just as much as Bill, and enjoyed every single minute of this book.

I am not a fan of fantasy elements in my books, but Stephen King always knows how to keep me interested. This book is not as good as the second but way better than the first. It’s honestly Hodges and Gibney that bring the series down for me; they’re not that charismatic. The powers Brady develops is interesting and it was interesting to see how the main cast would figure out how he was committing the murders. Brady isn’t the most interesting villain either but he served his purpose.
I listened to this book on Libby and Will Patton’s performance is what dragged me through the three books. He truly brings the cast to life and is what made this trilogy so captivating. If I had read these books I probably wouldn’t have made it this far.

První dvě knížky jsou v zásadě normální detektivky, třetí díl spíš už kingovský horror.

I am biased when it comes to Mr King however, this was a fitting end to an amazing trilogy. Engrossing as the two before and just plain worth it.
