A wonderful Sherlock Holmes story of love, murder, and of course, Sherlock's brilliant deducing skills. What a great short read that catches the readers attention with every word!

The first Sherlock Holmes mystery, as former army surgeon Dr Watson moves in with the consulting detective, and observes as Holmes attempts to solve a murder mystery. I loved how playful Sherlock is as a character, and the affection with which Watson describes his own admiration for his new roommate. I thought Sherlock's character was cleverly handled and obviously adored by his creator. Whenever he's on the page he steals the show, but sadly that means when he's absent, all the life fades from the story.

A Study in Scarlet is tale of two halves. A perfect first half is followed by 25% of uninterrupted backstory infodumping, followed by 25% of uninterrupted 'let me explain everything to you in as neat and boring a way as possible' in one chunk of dialogue. So structurally I hated it and was left disappointed, but in terms of characterisation I adored Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, and their dynamic as a pairing works so well.

It prompted me to want to read The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Final Problem.

absolutely nothing *~*researchy*~* to see here; an ongoing reading list

L'histoire ne m'a juste pas autant intéressé et malgré le fait que ce livre soit court, je l'ai trouvé long tout de même

The flashback to Utah is so disconnected I thought there was a glitch on Libby! But it eventually connected back to the main story line. By today's standards its really bigoted toward the Latter Day Saints but keeping in mind when it was written...
I enjoyed this so much more than I expected to! There's humor mixed in throughout & the characters are fairly well constructed. Derek Partridge was the narrator of the edition I checked out from the library by using Libby. He did a great job & kept me interested through the whole story.
I'm looking forward to reading...er, listening to the next one.
