I believe this is the first of the Sherlock Holmes series when Sherlock and Watson meet and investigate the murder of a man found in an abandoned house. I can appreciate the technical merit of this classic, but for me, the story dragged quite a bit and I had a difficult time staying interested in it.

This would’ve gotten 5 stars except the middle portion of the story kind of dragged for me. I wanted more London and less Utah, but I had to read the story where it all began. The mystery was interesting and I liked the review from the culprit about everything that happened and from Sherlock of how he solved it so the reader truly understands the whole story.

This was a really great Victorian detective fiction and its influence on others of the genre (both book and TV wise) is very apparent (for example I'm re-watching The Mentalist these days and Sherlock's influence on Patrick Jane as a character is substantial).

Unpopular opinion: the original is way better then the BBC mini-series as the latter's Sherlock is abolutely obnoxious and extremely insensitive which is all chalked up to (and apparently excused by) his genius.

Here, I actually liked Sherlock Holmes as a character (though he might seem less rude because of the time-period nuances), though the focus was definitely on the case, Watson and the backstory.

This surprised me by how funny and witty this is! It is, of course, Sherlock Holmes so I don't know why I expected anything different and I really enjoyed this.
Halfway through though, when we are transported to a whole different story, I was really confused and found myself not caring about these new characters. I wanted to get back to Watson and Holmes!
Overall, really enjoyed the Sherlock and John story, the other part: not so much.

A great beginning for Holmes and Watson, though I was not prepared for Arthur Conan Doyle to go so hard at the Mormons.

First book in my Sherlock Holmes challenge. Was expecting a bit more, but it's understandable with this being Doyle's first story. I have confidence they will improve.
