Moody and extremely well written. The audiobook is great and Emma Thompson's narration is excellent. A little underwhelming if only because there are so many other ghost stories out there. I also found the writing a little dense for me to comprehend in audiobook form. I'd like to read it some day.

I had a hard time finishing this one. The POV character reads like a deranged white mom on TikTok who is convinced there are gang members just waiting in every parking lot to kidnap their kid. I was so grossed our by this diluted helicopter parenting that any virtue this has as an early example of unreliable narration was lost on me.

If a chilling gothic novel is your thing then I would strongly reccomend this book. The twists and changes in the narrators character as she confronts the restless spirits (what restless spirits?) add to the chill that this book provides. The open ending of Miles being struck dead as Quint stares through the window, leaving the reader wondering if she is insane or Bly is haunted was a great way to close this story.

I like Gothic fiction in general and I have read this one three times. I just don't vibe with it...

This would be a great one for all the English Class Girlies out there. Much to discuss. Much to consider. Much space between the lines in which to read.

Trigger warnings frankly depend on your interpretation and what you bring to the work, which is unique about this book. I will include possibilities.

The ambiguity is very interesting. James leaves many events to be as innocent or as dark and disturbing as you interpret them.

This shell of a ghost story is an excuse to house one of the most openly classist and misogynistic books I've read. Leave it to some rich white dead dude to tell me how women will never have confidence in the face of men, will fawn to serve them on site, how boys should never stoop to be in the company of women when they could be around men, and that servants should know their place and also know they should never try to rise above it.
Do I know why these ghosts are haunting children? No. Do I know anything about the lead female characters other than they utterly worship the male child they're watching over? No.
Anything interesting or beyond surface level about this world or its characters were entirely created by The Haunting of Bly Manor Netflix show. Save the 4 hours you'd spend listening to this audiobook and give it to that instead. You'll get far more out of it.

This was....really good! I will be reading more Henry James. Curious to see if his writing is always this...mmm florid? Slightly confusing? I know this is like: hey everyone ever knows this is a classic and why, but I didn't . What should I read next by him community?

The final chapter raised the hair on my neck and arms, which was an oddly satisfying experience considering the desensitized world in which I live.
