this short stories felt very graphic and vulgar with the language, I couldn't tell what message the author was trying to portray through them. I might try to come back to this book in the future when I am in the right mindset to truly "get it".

Moshfegh’s collection of stories explores the lives of people that society would normally deem appalling, but the lack of condescension in the narrative questions the reader’s superiority

I’m still not a fan of short stories. However, these were interesting. This is my first Moshfegh book so I had no idea what her writing style and voice would be like. All of these stories are so mundane but there is beauty is simplicity. One thing I know I lack in my writing is attention to detail which this book definitely does not lack. All of the characters and setting and movement is described in so many unnecessary details but it’s so easy to visual everything that is happening. Idk. Overall, only one or two stories really stood out to me and piqued my interest. I wish I had started with a novel from Moshfegh instead of short stories to really appreciate her as an author. I rate this book as… mediocre at best.

loved how many women were wearing blue eyeshadow and how many men had horrible acne in these stories

Not really my cup of tea, specifically almost all characters being fatphobic is a big turn off. That said, Moshfegh's ability of painting disturbing characters in excruciating detail is straight up unparalleled.

Disturbing, disgusting, and yet I kept reading? The writing was amazing and I can’t stop thinking about it.

I’m pretty sure this was the first book of short stories I have read. And it was great! Otessa has a talent for writing bad people from a modern perspective. There were some stories I liked more than others but overall it was a pleasurable reading experience.
