Mostly interesting. Loses some credibility for using Hemingway as an example of craft well-done, like somehow the man knew what he was doing and had impeccable wordsmithing...

Would have loved to see Llosa reference more female writers. As it was, Virginia Woolf is, like, the token lady.

useful and interesting. it reminded me of my old school days, wishing i had such interesting literature classes. it also makes you want to read most of the novels he discusses there.

***

This short book by Mario Vargas Llosa is in the form of letters to an aspiring novelist. It covers all the standard elements of a novel like narration, plot, time, and characters. In the course of it, Vargas Llosa illuminatingly discusses a number of his favorite novels, from 19th Century classics like Madame Bovary to contemporary Latin American novelists.
