I can't believe I've read 6/7 books for the Reading Rush!
I loved this book. The content is something not often touched base on, and I think, again, this is an EXTREMELY important topic to see. This DOES happen in the world, it's horrible. It was dealt with in such an interesting, yet, powerful way. The content was so poetically told... yet, still portraying the harshness that I knew would play in this book.

This book is a bit difficult for me to rate. I have been interested in/followed the phenomenon of human trafficking and the education for girls and women in developing countries for a number of years, so perhaps it is because I have already heard and read about the atrocities that lessen the impact of this book for me. This book is a great one to introduce people to how human trafficking ends up occurring and what life in a brothel can be like, but beyond the generic story (and the unfortunately even more generic western-centric ending), there is not much the book has to offer. For those more interested in this topic, and willing to sit with discomfort and a giant grey zone, try Not for Sale by David Batstone or A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah.

Typically when I read a banned or challenged book, I see the value but it’s not a book I enjoy reading. While I can’t say that “enjoy” is the right word for how I feel about this book… it was frankly, a phenomenal book. Devastating, raw, disturbing, heartbreaking and filled with determination and resilience. The fact is, this story is not written about an isolated incident, it is written about a horrific epidemic of abuse and violence against women and girls… and while this is set in India, you’re foolish if you don’t believe it’s happening across the globe. I say with my whole chest, that this book is perfect. It’s awful but it’s perfect and it should be widely available without challenge.
