Loved it. As good as her other book about the universe.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I didn’t enjoy The Priory of The Orange Tree but decided to try this one to see if it were any better. I am so glad I did. I was fully engaged in the story, in the characters, in the trajectory of the tale.
It was a very heavy book to read and it’s taken me longer to read than a book normally would, I found it hard to skip from character to character in each chapter and at points I had to put the book down after a chapter as I wasn’t ready to read another character’s perspective so soon. Which is why it’s a four star and not a five star. I would recommend this book! Definitely

Another win for inclusivity in the fantasy realm! The way queer relationships and non cisgender persons are effortlessly integrated into Samantha Shannon’s world in A Day of Fallen Night is masterful, and something I hope we continue to see in publications from more authors.

Although this piece can be read as a standalone book, as a prequel, it was nearly impossible not to compare it to The Priory of the Orange Tree. While this book is also richly detailed and includes multiple POV narrations from well-developed and diverse characters, I did not find it to be as captivating of a read. Though spanning a longer period, the plot of this tale seemed to move more slowly and to hold lower stakes.

With this pacing, and having enjoyed both books, it would be my recommendation for future readers to enjoy the Roots of Chaos novels in chronological order rather than publication order.

I really loved this book, but there is so much in here that it's hard to review it. So I will just say: A LOT of sapphic goodness, quite a bit of lovely political intrigue and... honestly that's all you need to know, this book is intricate and lovely and it's so long, but still, at the end you would feel like you want the story to go on. I really hope we will get the indirect sequel Shannon was talking about!

Also, I didn't experience a bookish crush in quite a while, but Nikeya was... *sigh* just love her...

I'm really looking forward to re-reading this one, because surely I will!
