Found it slow and confusing to start, hard to get into the world, despite knowing I’d already read the priory and the orange tree.

But then, I did get sucked in finishing up reading passed midnight. The strong female characters hooked me in to following their oaths, sometimes leaving me frustrated when we hopped to another because I was so absorbed in the one before. But I don’t think I had a specific favourite any any point.

I strangely don’t remember any of the priory and the orange tree at all, which makes me wonder if I will retain anything of the characters in this one either.

Still loved the writing style here. I think the pacing could've been better. Having read the Priory, I knew what happened in the future -- so sometimes the stakes of various events didn't seem so dire -- the urgency and desperation didn't hit as hard. It also followed a similar narrative to the Priory, so I do wish that Samantha explored something more different for this storyline.
