I'm just confused. I don't think I could say that I enjoyed reading this book, and although there were sections which were dark, eerie and fascinating, most of it was just bizarre. The characters all seemed unconnected and the plot didn't seem to follow and develop until right near the end. The multitude of characters was bewildering and I have finished it feeling underwhelmed and a bit disappointed!

The premise of this book seemed cool, and the first several pages were very intriguing, especially the scene where the man crafts a bow from his lover's body. After that, it just spiraled off into these random stories that wouldn't have been so bad if I actually cared about the characters. The author has a deft way with words but it seemed like all head and no heart. I just couldn't get motivated enough to follow through. I made it about 130 pages and gave up, which I hate to do, but I just wasn't invested. When I was in grad school I might have eaten it up, but I don't have the patience for a book I can't get into anymore.

I rarely DNF books, but this one not only wasn't resonating with me, it also made me feel terrible most of the times I read it. I saw it recommended in conversations around the Area X books and Book of the New Sun, both of which are favorites, but this wasn't really doing much of what I personally enjoyed about those. Plenty of people (including Area X's author!) seemed to love it, so YMMV.
Moderate: Sexual content, Cultural appropriation, and Colonisation
I honestly felt that some of the depictions of native cultures were fetishistic in a strange way. The author definitely depicts colonization in a bad light, so a generous read is that it's attempting to explore similar topics in a way that doesn't glorify them... but it didn't feel quite right to me personally.clarkissimo's review against another edition

The Vorrh is dark and weird and dark. And weird. I mean this as a compliment.

Meaty and whimsically poetic. Each sentence seems to glitter, no matter the noun.

Think Joseph Conrad meets Neil Gaiman. It starts off as a stream of barely related vignettes until a solid 250 pages before the connections appear, but when they do, you can't put it down and besides at that point you're so far in that the only way out is to reach the end. It's fun to experience the writing itself as a parallel to the forest that is the subject of the book. And the writing is just gorgeous.
