Think Joseph Conrad meets Neil Gaiman. It starts off as a stream of barely related vignettes until a solid 250 pages before the connections appear, but when they do, you can't put it down and besides at that point you're so far in that the only way out is to reach the end. It's fun to experience the writing itself as a parallel to the forest that is the subject of the book. And the writing is just gorgeous.
