I think I am so used to Gaskell's longer works that I found Cousin Phyllis to be somehow unfinished - superficial. The writing is of course impeccable, but I didn't care that much about the characters - I found them too trapped by their typology - they don't have time to grow somehow. This is also the first of her writings that I read which is written from a young man's perspective and I found him unconvincing as a narrator. All in all, a bit mediocre, but that's probably because I now expect a bit more drama and excitement from Gaskell's writing.

Ended quite abruptly and not how I was expecting, but I loved the writing.

I wasn't expecting much from this as it sounded relatively slow. However the details in Jane's writing made it feel like you're there with the characters. Phillis is a character you instantly feel attached to & the ending will leave you with so many emotions

Gaskell’s prose is superb - per usual - but the plot is a bit…lacking at the end. I find her longer works much better. However, Cousin Phillis is a pleasant, quick read, which I would recommend to fellow lovers of Gaskell’s writing.
