It took me several months to read this book because it was painful to get through. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes the depiction of mental illness and depression felt genuine and real, but it was overshadowed by the other aspects of the book.

To put it this way, the book most definitely feels like it was written by a teenage boy. There are multiple references to sex that are raunchy and really distracted me from the main message. The narrator, Craig, cannot describe a single female character without it feeling vile. There’s even a line where a character’s  breasts are said to roll along with her eyes (I had to put the book down and reflect).

Not only that but the characters all felt two dimensional. As you can probably assume, none of the female characters are there for anything other than to be fantasy material for Craig.
I was so upset with the half-hearted buildup of his relationship with Noelle. She was suffering because she was objectified and used, and that’s exactly what Craig does to her as well and it was awful.

Oh yeah, there’s also slurs in here, as well as just really offensive descriptions. The trans character mentioned on the back cover appears ONCE, and it’s only to be some sort of twisted comedic relief. We never get any of her story, and the scene she was in left a bad taste in my mouth.

I don’t understand why I tortured myself with finishing the book.

This book was GREAT! except it wasn't really for me,,, i think my main issue with it is that it's so real. I'm 17 and I've been struggling with depression for almost 3 years so I feel very understood from this book and its characters and I've caught myself dropping a tear or two whenever Craigs Family were just the cutest support system ever (wish i had that)

BUT, I really cannot be bothered with books written by men tbh,,, apart for the blatant romanticisation of mental illness and suicide,, the way the main character kept on having the most disrespectful, disgusting thoughts about girls just triggered me immensely,, not the mention the random ass men that kept on sexualizing the 15 year old Noelle..

Honestly the best book ive read in a LONG time, maybe even better than The perks of being a wallflower. I read almost the whole of it over two days and it was the easiest most relatable book that ive picked up in a long time. I felt like the book was written about me as everything Craig felt ive felt identically at more than a few points in the last couple of years i dont normally reread books but i would definitely read this again. only bad thing about this book is the name craig

Craig is an alright character, self aware and I liked some of his quotes. I find the whole Craig finds love in asylium  unnecessary, it's the same as in more YA contemporary books and it's boring and not that realistic.
But the way he describes women is ... concerning, to say at least. I had to skip a lot of parts of the book because it was just disgusting.
I don't get the hype it got/is getting, didn't live up to my expectations.

i don’t know.
the book hit home in so many ways. i appreciate how it talked about depression and anxiety and the emphasis on the fact that depression is a chemical imbalance is great. i found myself relating to many of craig‘s thoughts
but i hate how much it focuses on him being obsessed with having sex. i get it, he’s a 15 year old teenager and i think that’s what made it easier to deal with but it was very frustrating to read his thoughts when meeting girls and especially girls who he found to be pretty. that made me him so much less likable
not to mention the transphobia and dead naming as soon as craig found himself in the mental hospital
i’m thankful that the book doesn’t end on a hopeful note but why did it have to end with craig feeling better because he nearly had sex and found a girl who likes him back

i’m glad i read it because of the relatable description of anxiety and depression but i’m not sure if i would recommend it to anyone due to craig’s harmful thoughts
