I didn’t find any of this particularly funny. Wasn’t looking for comedy but they didn’t emphasize “kind of” enough in the title. Maybe it’s a better book for a teenager but this felt angsty and broody. A little “Go Ask Alice,” if you will. The dialogue was engaging and the writing was fine…but the story was insignificant and plot was lackluster.

[originally read in high school] this was another book that felt like looking in a mirror. i related so much to the main character's plight: mental health struggles, going to a difficult high school, no friends, finding solace in the struggles of others, and desperately searching for the will to live. an inspiring, but tragic, story that i recommend to everyone who has ever felt like they've finally hit rock bottom and need some light.

It's Kind of A Funny Story by Ned Vizzini is one of the books that you should have read at least once in your life. Even though the story is about a very serious topic – mental disorders, depression in particular – it is still a very light read and is very funny at times. It's an honest book, very relatable for those who have suffered or are still suffering from depression. This book tells you that it's okay, that it can get better, that there's people out there who will be there for you. A very touching story with some of the most incredible characters out there that you will learn to love as if they really exist.
