I've actually read that one in French a couple of years back, mainly because it was one of the inspirations for one of my favourite novels, the Club Dumas by Arturo Perez-Reverte. It's a great occult story, kind of like fantasy before fantasy was established as a genre. A very enjoyable read.

Sympathique.

I read this because it was referenced in the book The Dumas Club. While the writing style is eloquent and romantic in a sense. The story itself while being dark and mysterious meanders. For its time I can see it being provocative but for modern day it’s just okay and somewhat anticlimactic at the end given the suspense of it all.
