Some parts of this I reeaally liked, but otherwise followed a pretty conventional romcomdram plotline- which nothing wrong with that when you need it :) Parts that were done well were the horror film relevance to its metaphor, references, and importance to its characters; the main character's fun and rough journey (the second hand embarrassment towards the end with the bday party is rough, but everything did lead up to it so it's not like I didn't see that coming...); and I hate to say this aloud but the homophobia/bigotry moments that captures its subtlety and how the characters respond and react to it. Me and the homies hate homophobia but I liked seeing how it was depicted here that felt so specific to a high school kid who cannot wait to leave their small homophobic town in their red-leaning state.
The romance was nice too, although maybe leaned into the romcom pacing a tad much for my taste. and also I'm tired of angsty handling of kisses bc I know in my heart I would never kiss anyone in the spur of a moment LOL. That never felt realistic to me but I may be in the minority here as an ace person? They did have greatly similar interest in horror movies which is cool. Also it's kinda nice in the way that I interpret their relationship in the end to be people who find solace in each other and do like each other very much in the moment- but I feel like these dudes would break up with each other if one went to a different city lol. Glad they mostly figured out their shit together.
Also how many times will I consume Jane Austen inspired media without knowing its that!? Northanger Abby.

Ah, back to my old enemy - the miscommunication trope causing so many unnecessary issues.
The book was ok-ish, it's a realativly short graphic novel about two gay teens hiding who they are for fear of public humiliation.
I didnt really like the hot to cold relationship the guys had - if they just talked it out from the beginning the relationship would have been alot healthier. Overall alot of the characters just seemed like they kept secrets for the sake of keeping secrets. I also think the character develpoment of certain characters becoming less homophobic was very lacklustre and brief - literally just a few pannels and then everything was suddenly OK.
I did enjoy the rural ranch setting and the artwork was in a nice style.

Loved all the horror movie references and how the main characters bonded over them. The art style was moody and dark, yet still cute.

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperAlley for providing me an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review
This is a modern retelling of Jane Austin's Northranger Abbey. I have not read the source material, so I can't attest to how closely it follows the plot, but I can say that is a very good book on its own!
It's a beautifully illustrated coming of age story set in rural Texas. Cade is spending the summer working on his stepfather' friend's ranch in order to help his family make ends meet. Henry, the son of the ranch owner, quickly becomes a potential love interest, but also maybe a murder suspect?!
Cade's love of horror movies, coupled with one of his fellow ranch-hand's disdain for Henry and his father, create a fun level of suspense/suspicion that leads to a few awkward situations.
Overall, this was a great book which I will be recommending to teens who like lgbt+ romance and graphic novels. My only reservation for suggesting this book to potential readers is that they be mindful of the trigger warnings in the beginning (so glad it was included!) as this book is set in contemporary rural TX, complete with racism and homophobia.
