A bit slowly paced, but very interesting. The characters are pretty well done, and the descriptions are mostly very convincing. There are a few absolutely horrible scenes describing electroshock "therapy", but mostly this is a war novel with minimal violence and gore.

The whole Regeneration series is gorgeous. I love that they explore what we now know as PTSD but which were less understood in World War I.

This was largely excellent. I had trouble at times parsing English slang and there were a few passages where there was constant dialogue but no speakers named so I had to look back to see who was saying what.

There was one sentence early in the book that stopped me cold to sit and ponder. And there were at least two chapters so superbly written and paced that I was completely gripped.

There were a couple of plot threads for characters that I wasn't sure about in terms of where they ended up or why the motivation was mentioned. Definitely interested in reading the other two in the series.

A very subtle, and mildly disturbing novel about coming to terms with what is sanity amidst an insane war and insane bureaucracy. Based loosely on the rehabilitation of a lauded soldier and poet who turns against the war and is sent to be repaired at a psychological facility. A great story that resonates in our time.

A friend gave me this book about 10 years ago, and I didn't get past the first chapter.

I'm glad I found it on the bookshelf. What a novel. It's tragic how slept on this book is.

A quick read, actually based on true individuals are largely on real events - you won’t know until you read the author’s notes right at the end.
An excellent reflection on the horrors of WW I and the impact it had on the mental health of many.
