Finally another decent entry in the series. History and mystery with issues firmly within its medieval setting. And although it adheres pretty much to the formula, it doesn’t do so strictly. It dresses it up in different clothes.

The "mystery" was completely obvious from the start. Otherwise, enjoyable as all Brother Cadfael books, I guess.

The mystery here, for once, is not who killed who or why. It is a mystery of secrets, love, and devotion.

Although I usually love Ellis Peters, and I did enjoy this book, it was a little less compelling than others in the series, probably because the twist was a bit more obvious than usual, and once I'd worked it out, the rest of the story lost some of its compulsion. The central relationship, between Fidelis and Humilis, is touching and lovely, and the sub-plot with Urien was an interesting addition, but somehow this didn't come together quite as perfectly as previous mysteries by Peters. I've read others since, and they are back up to her usual quality, so I think this is just a blip. Having said that, it was very enjoyable, and fully deserves its 4 stars, just not the full 5 I would usually give.

This review is based on the audiobook. If you like the Brother Cadfael mysteries, you'll like this. Like most of the others I've read in this series, it does a good job of depicting the chaos of the civil war between Stephen and Matilda and how it affected relatively ordinary people. The mystery is intriguing and with a good resolution, with characters I found likable and engaging.

This WAS an excellent mystery. Quite delicate, very old school, very charming.
