This is the story of continuing losses by Kata, the narrator, who is 6 years (approximately) and tells the story of her family into Hungary to mid 50s. At first, the mother runs away and leaves the children with the father, then he decides to go with the children between relatives and friends leaving his house, and in the end we also have the tragic end of Isti. Despite this, the book is light, also because of the fact that the children feel united to the father only while swimming with him, the chapters should be read as small reflections, but eventually the sadness was too much for me to appreciate the book in its entirety. ..

Bánk has an amazing ability to draw us deeply into her character's inner worlds, her descriptions of surfaces and spaces is mesmerizing. I especially appreciate her ability to represent the intricately complicated emotions between parents and their children. This is the second book I've read of hers and Nadas' assessment is spot on.
