This book, a per the title, is a lot of waiting. You wait with the girls inside their house and you wait for any action to start, which there is very little of. The first chapter was great as an immediate hook, but the story just falls apart from there. There are too many homely details that don't need to be there and the action is repetitive. I understand this book is based on true events, but unfortunately it read in a boring manner. Months passed, but there was too much unrelated to the case at hand happening in the narrative that it felt like Fleurette and her youth was the main focus of the novel and not Constance and her beginnings as a sheriff's deputy. And to be honest the characters were bland. Fleurette was an annoyingly spoiled child, Norma was too stern with nothing more, and Constance was really only her size. The court room scene lacked intrigue. Constance had her moment, but I felt like we lost pieces from Fleurette given her flamboyant personality.
There wasn't much mystery or thrill in here. You knew from the get go Henry's sister's involvement in the novel because she does constantly clean up her brother's messes. All in all, not a terrible read, but nothing special.

An interesting look at the state of women in the early 1900's. The plot moved quickly and got to the point early. Background information was parceled out as needed with flashback chapters that filled in some of the motivations for the characters in present day. I enjoy historical fiction and this did not disappoint. It was not a great book, but a good read and I enjoyed knowing that this was based on actual events and people.

I really liked the concept of this book, but I didn’t enjoy the execution very much. I didn’t feel much of a connection with the characters and it felt very slow paced. This may be the challenge of basing a story on real life sometimes. It picked up a bit in the last quarter and came to a satisfactory conclusion, which lifted my rating to 3 stars. I won’t be recommending it much I imagine.

I really liked this story. The author did a nice job of unfolding the plot at a good pace while interspersing back story, character development, and historical details.
Based on real events.

My library book club discussed this and skyped with the author. Club members enjoyed the book, and the author was a delight.
The narrative is good at making the reader feel like they are in 1914 without relying on too much detail. The sisters and their brother have distinctive personalities, and the sheriff is an intriguing character. I listened to about half the audiobook and read the rest, and the audio narrator is quite good. The author took a true tidbit and ran with it.
I think a good editor could have trimmed this book up a bit to make the story tighter, but overall I enjoyed the book.

2.5/2.75 stars, really. I didn't hate it. I just wasn't gripped in the way I expected. It was more of an old-fashioned crime procedural than a mystery or thriller.

I loved that this book is based on true events. I didn't like the multiple grammatical errors. They really take away from the story. I would imagine by the time a book gets to the printing phase, someone would have caught the errors.
Besides that, I think the author is a great storyteller and I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Not bad!
Very fast paced read, with some action and a few interesting storylines. Didn’t really have a lot of depth to it, and it was a little bit heavy on the whole “early 1900s detective” thing, but overall not a waste of time. Unsure if I’ll pick up the next one, but it was a fine way to kill a few hours.
