I rate it highly cuz she had me jumping from one person to the next, fully convinced each time that I knew who the killer was. I liked how Kelley explored relationships with the police, micro aggressions, Perky Black Girl- damn that's exhausting.
I didn't think there was anything Adore could do to get back in home girl's good graces but it looks like she was forgiven in the end. I don't know if I would have been able to give her that same grace.

What just happened

Enjoyed everything up until the climax

Everything after that felt rushed and half baked

This had something to say, bordering on didactic at times. My main struggle with this was some of the writing quirks that drove me up a wall, the repetition of phrases, unrealistic internal monologues, and attempts at modern day slang. I also didn’t find the ending satisfying, as we never got a full resolution of motives for all.

This was one that I prioritized as one of the 25 I wanted to read this year. Unfortunately, this was meh. I loved that it was written by a black author and that it highlighted how black people are often treated and already found guilty before being tried for crimes. The story just kept circling and was kinda predictable, seems like some ends were left unfinished and overall it wasn’t as thrilling as it could’ve been.
