This was one that I prioritized as one of the 25 I wanted to read this year. Unfortunately, this was meh. I loved that it was written by a black author and that it highlighted how black people are often treated and already found guilty before being tried for crimes. The story just kept circling and was kinda predictable, seems like some ends were left unfinished and overall it wasn’t as thrilling as it could’ve been.

It’s been a while since I powered through a book just to get it over with. I wanted to love this book or at least like it given the back cover was an exciting draw. I’ve never read a Kelley Garret novel before and I desperately wanted to bring another African American woman author onto my shelf and share her story with others. Unfortunately, this just wasn’t the book for me. I don’t believe in bashing another artists’ work as I’m sure this was a painstaking project to complete and I applaud any writer who actually puts a story from their head into something tangible. The story, character and pace were just hard to for me enjoy - despite a kick-ass plot.
The main character, Brianna (Bree) is a young woman in love and on a bey-cation. You can tell by her mannerisms she is a bit over trusting, immature and laden with past hurts and trauma that never heals. In fact, it is present throughout the story and really angers you as a reader.
When Brianna encounters a dead white woman in her air bnb living room on the last day of her stay and her boyfriend no where to be found, she makes dumb decisions over and over again. Her history catches up to her in a way that shows she is still stuck in the past. She experiences damaging relationships for which she doesn’t address and becomes too trusting of those she just met. The ending of the book left me with so many questions. I hoped I would grow to appreciate and feel for the main character but instead I was annoyed with almost every chapter. I would pick up another Kellye Garret book, but I would not force myself beyond two chapters if the story doesn’t hold me.

Fast paced thriller. Kept me turning the pages. A little predictable towards the end.
