I thought this book would illustrate how nurses are the heroes of the medical industry. Instead, it showed how dangerous work is for an ER nurse. Bullied by doctors, assaulted by patients and placed in dangerous situations daily without backup, the ER nurse's 12 hour shift seems like a combat zone. I gave up on the book about a third of the way through.

A bit uneven in writing and content. Convinced me that healthcare should never be a business, and that I never want to work as a nurse (or be a patient) in the United States.

This book gives a good glimpse into the lives of nurses - a thing I was already well aware of thanks to my mom being an ER nurse when I was a teenager. I hope that people are reading this that don't already have a connection to a nurse and that it's opening eyes to the way nurses are treated, and the way they go above and beyond for their patients and their coworkers.
I only gave it three stars because I liked it, but I didn't *love* it. If you want to know more about the real working conditions and various life situations of the nurses who take care of you, this book will show you.

Day by day happenings in 4 hospitals following several ER nurses.
Really a behind the scenes account of this profession. I learned a tremendous amount and will forever view nurses differently. Their work is so very needed and I think, under-appreciated .
Only negative: can seem a little long because of all the details, but is every bit informative.
One thing I learned: this population, because of its extremely high stress levels and easy access to narcotics, is very vulnerable to chemical dependency. Being aware of this and having support options/stopgaps in place can offer some relief/solutions to this very real dilemma.
The author does provide several suggestions to improve the pitfalls in this line of work gleaned from her many interviews with nurses in the trenches. She doesn’t just lay out the problems in nursing, she offers real answers from those who should know - the nurses who are actually dealing with all the

Engaging read but frequently weighed down with too many statistics.

Whoa.
This book changed my whole perspective on nonfiction, besties. I've only read nonfiction books this month, most of them memoirs, but this book made me really want to read more books that are simply nonfiction.
I was really unsure what this book even was, at first, but basically, it's an examination of the nursing profession and the struggles that come with it through 10 different essays. But the twist of this is that there are personal accounts of 4 different nurses that sort of feel like a fiction novel.
Anyway, this was so good, and I'm excited to read the author's book about "overachievers" next!
