I will definitely be reading more Allende. Aside from my anticipating the family "plot twist" (I use that term loosely) really early on, this book was an engaging, non-linear adventure. I enjoyed the back and forth timeline and Maya's developing plausible relationships at different times with such different people. I finished the book and wanted to know what happened to Maya afterwards, but I don't think that's Allende's style.

I think there's a story in here somewhere. I want to find it, but the book is sloooooooow. I keep making excuses not to read. I already stopped and read a different book and am trying to get back into this.

UPDATE: I finished it! Such a painful book to read, which doesn't make sense because many of the individual elements were quite interesting. I think it would have been better if it had been written linearly instead of as a series of flashbacks.

I won this book in a giveaway! I wasn't sure what I thought about it at first, but once I got into it I had a hard time putting it down. The story was very intriguing and kept the reader guessing at what was going to happen next. I will defiantly recommend this book to my friends and family :)

Excellent! Isabel Allende is a master storyteller. Her characters are full of life. Her descriptions of the Chilean people, their customs, and the landscape are so vibrant I want to go there and travel the same roads as Maya, eat with citizens of Chiloe, and experience the festivities.

Oof. I usually enjoy Allende's works, but this story fell flat for me. I felt like I was reading one long run-on sentence. This book was 90% summary and 10% scene and it really burned me out (I found myself skimming paragraphs just to get by all the mountains of description). The characters were also difficult to connect to, especially Maya.

Overall, just a disappointing read for me.
