The book tried to be too many things at once. Mystery (multiple), family drama, coming-of-age drama, cultural, diary, travelogue... And it didn't quite gel together. The flashback structure tried to meld into the current day one, and many times it was disjointed and felt choppy. I think this could have been a better book than it was if it picked 1 or 2 strong narratives instead of trying to be everything at once.

I loved it up until the contrived, saw-it-coming ending. In spite of that, I still liked it a lot and it will be one of the more memorable books I read this year. And now I want to travel around Chile.

Eh.
It was a quick read, and it was fine, but that's it.

I think I was surprised that Maya turned out to be a fairly reliable narrator. And I felt that the whole story just fizzled out in the end.tintaenmediodetinieblas's review against another edition

Isabelle Allende is a poetic, masterful writer, and she has written a realistic mystery woven with some hallmark themes of teenage rebellion: drugs, sex, and betrayal. The consequences of Maya's teenage years land her on a remote island of Chile, the birthplace of her father and grandmother. The slow pace of island life and its inhabitants works it's magic, and as she begins to heal from the past, she uncovers the strength and beauty within herself. Maya's Notebook is a good read.

Maya's own account of 2 turbulent years in her young and troubled life. I loved her Nini and Popo, the grandparents who raised her. At sixteen she loses her Popo to cancer and has no idea how to grow up without his protection. She runs amok in high school so her distant dad puts her into treatment that she runs away from. It was hard to read about the cruelty and abuse that she deals with, turning to drug & alcohol addiction. The best part of the book takes place in Chiloe', an island off Chile, where Maya sorts out her life and comes to terms w/ it.
