The plot was complex and engaging but this author's attempt at writing about race, sex, and prejudice feels tone deaf and uncomfortable. Screams "written by a white man".

Greg Isles is a great writer and this book does not disappoint as far as the main story line goes - enough twists and turns to keep you interested but not so complicated that it’s confusing.

My disappointment and reason for not giving 5 stars was the fact that in some cases Penn stooped to the level of Drew. Am I naive enough to believe that older men aren’t attracted to younger women? No, but would have been nice to have a character, especially one with a daughter, draw the line and not give into it at all. I don’t feel like the book gained anything from having Mia come on to Penn, because while I know these relationships exist, it becomes unbelievable to me that in a class of 20 seniors at least 3 of them are pursuing inappropriate relationships with significantly older men. If I could have tweaked the book in one way, I would have been happier seeing Mia dating a college guy - she could understand wanting to reach beyond high school for a man that is more mature than the boys around her without the taint of it being a completely inappropriate relationship.

I haven't read Greg Iles in awhile and re-discovered a good author. Greg Iles is a true Southern author. Spinning tales full of Southern people, ideas, mannerisms and thoughts. "Turning Angel" if full of secrets, blackmail, betrayal, and violence. Very suspenseful to the end.

Nowhere near as good/interesting as the first one. The whole premise is a little icky, but honestly, by the end I had mostly resigned myself to Drew and Kate's relationship...it was the weird sexual tension between Penn and his babysitter that really grossed me out. Like I know these things happen, but this book made it seem like every teenage girl who has a brain goes after middle aged men, which I think is largely untrue. And the ick factor was HIGH. I thought Penn was a good guy (and maybe all guys think like this sometimes) but the fact that he was thinking about someone who was 1)not his girlfriend and 2)only a few years older than his daughter really grossed me out. Like "could not get past it" grossed me out.

And Mia (the babysitter). There was potential for character development there. Instead Iles took a strong intelligent female and made her bend to every whim of an older man. She had so many things going for her. She wanted to get out of the town. Why in the hell would she ever want to connect herself with Penn?!? It just didn't make sense to me. And the fact that she told Penn about sexual things going on at the high school was just gross. Oh, and the fact that Penn promised to show her what was on the drive...even when it was naked pictures of an adult and underage girl. I don't even want to go there. And the fact that they look at it together. WTF?!? Just wrong on so many levels.

The end came out of nowhere. It's Drew. It's his wife. It's the new kid. The new kid had sex with an unconscious, nearly dead woman?!? Too much for me. I also thought the title was dumb. I didn't get the Turning Angel or the metaphor it was supposed to convey. It just made for a creepy scene in a cemetery. Overall, The Quiet Game was a much better book. Couldn't put it down. This one was easy to put down. Sometimes it was so cringey I HAD to put it down. Quite the fall from the first book in the series. I'll probably finish the series but if there are one or more like this one, I don't think I can handle it.

This is evidently a love it or hate it book. I can understand.....I like the continuing characters in this 2nd in the series but the subject matter is quite controversial. I like controversy as it makes me think. I don't agree with the conclusions made by several characters but that doesn't mean that can't come to whatever they think they are.

Quick read, but a bit far-fetched in the middle and a truly gruesome end.
