It was a good beginning, but the ending seemed a little rushed and I think this lacked the world building I've seen in other of Mull's works. It's a popular series already with the upper elementary set, though, and since it follows along the same lines of The 39 Clues books with different authors and reader participation I imagine that the plot has been heavily outlined and volume two will expand upon the groundwork laid here.

12-year-old me gives this a 4-star rating. This is a book I would definitely have loved when I was that age. I thought it was very good even now as an adult, but I feel it's my inner 12-year-old who gets to rate the book. It's the start of a series and I do love the promise of a good adventure series for young people.

I really liked this book. I found the storyline very engaging y I like that the series is going to be written by many different authors. I hope my students like it as much a I did.

I picked this up for my son, but who can resist Brandon Mull? It was a fun read but may be challenging for my second grader.

The first book in a new series. My students who love Kathryn Lasky's Gahoole and Wolves of the Beyond books are passing this one from reader to reader.

This is book has a fascinating premise and is written fabulously. Although it is meant for kids and teens, it doesn’t dumb down the story in any way, I enjoyed it as an adult. If given the choice, I would have liked it to be a bit longer with more characterization, but I think that would put it at an adult reading level.

I can’t wait to read more in this series, this is going to be one of our family’s favorite.
