Excelente.

“Knossos has its hidden secrets, its labyrinth below the surface. But Athens keeps nothing below the surface. Anger, greed, and lechery are all on display. And no one is safe” (29).
This novel reimagines Phaedra’s tragic story and explores themes of power, betrayal, religion, and the typical male and female roles in ancient Greece. In Greek mythology, many reprehensible acts committed by heroes are glossed over or accepted as part of their narrative. While the implication that every man in Athens was evil (or at least morally gray) is not an effective approach, the re-examination of heroes/characters like Theseus, Herakles, and Medea are well done. Shepperson encourages readers to reflect on the nature of heroism, the complexities of human behavior, and the cultural values that inform these timeless stories. This approach enriches our understanding of these myths and underscores the relevance of ancient tales in contemporary discussions about morality, justice, and gender.

I have very mixed feelings about both the book and the audiobook.
The book:
I like how the story is structured, it felt very theatrical. The writing is pretty plain, and modern. I would have liked Trypho’s character to have been a bit more fleshed out. Otherwise I enjoyed the overall story that was told here.
The audiobook:
While I enjoy audiobooks that have a full cast (or multiple) narrators this one felt a little over produced. Having the Night Chorus be voiced by multiple overlapping voices had a great theatrical effect but made it a bit difficult to fully comprehend. It felt over the top at the beginning. And again, there are odd pronunciations of some characters (these were not as grating as they were in Jennifer Saint’s Hera)

The book was very loosely based in the classic Greek myths. Characters that did not encounter each other were present in the tale, and much of the story revolved around a trial. I’m not opposed to reimagining myths, but this seemed to focus on making sure certain talking points were hit instead of crafting a story. In the end, this failed to be the feminist “Me Too” triumph the author seemed to be setting up. Not enjoyable to read and an unsatisfying ending.

I've really been searching for great Greek Mythology retellings lately and came across this title on a few lists. Overall, the audiobook wasn't my favorite, but I did appreciate the use of a full cast and the editing on the Night Chorus sections. Highly recommend listening to those sections with headphones in for full effect!

The story was alright. I think that I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t read Ariadne or Circe within the last six months. So many retellings about the same Greek storyline can get a little overused.
It was interesting to see Phaedra try to fight what happened using the court system first. It’s not common in history that a woman’s words would be believed or listened to.

This book is definitely written for someone who enjoys Greek history. There were many elements of Greek historical context, and Greek mythology. This book showcased what being a woman during ancient Greece was like for either the peasant woman, the working woman, and royalty. It includes multiple points of views from both men and women.
The story follow the young princess of Crete, Phaedra, and her marriage to the new king of Athens, Theseus. Phaedra learns how to navigate the political landscape of Athens while living in a loveless marriage and yearning for someone whom she can’t have. This story does contain S.A. Scenes, murder, and suicide.
