This was very much like PG Wodehouse's books about Bertie Wooster living the high life with Jeeves in New York City in the 1920s--if Bertie were gay and in love with a Black jazz aficionado--oh, and there was magic! Thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks to my colleague Ken for alerting me to this delicious spin-off from the Rivers of London series. I hope it becomes its own series!

Nightingale on a mission in 1920s New York seeks help from a Wooster-ish school chum.

Great fun. I would like to read the probably fictional books mentioned in the endpapers.

i was recommended this book by a friend who said if I liked wodehouse, I'd love it. There's enough background info that i picked up everything else as I went. and, even if you've read the others, i think the narration style is enough to keep you entertained through the brief recap.
Also my friend was right! Aaronovitch makes no secret that Gussie is inspired by Bertie Wooster, though the character is unique enough that it felt more like homage than fanfiction. And I loved Lucian as well as the rest of the side characters.
