Fun read, if somewhat simple. Came for the plot but I stayed for the dark academia meets mermaid aesthetics. The plot truly doesn’t materialize till almost the end of the book, but if you’re looking for a story ft. sapphic, goth sea witch girlfriends that is 99% vibes and angst, then Dark Tide is gonna hit the spot. Pretty satisfying ending, too.

Um, what did I just read?
It’s telling that the author mentions being a big fan of Alan Moore, because much like Alan’s work, this book takes itself too seriously. The plot is largely non-sensical and overly complicated for no real reason. Although I don’t know the author’s gender, every single woman character feels very “men writing women”. The men are all extremely obnoxious as well. That’s when you can tell who is who. The character designs are so inconsistent it’s hard to tell the characters apart so they all begin to blend together pretty quickly. I think this book could have benefited from a really good editor.
I will say, the art style seemed pretty thematically appropriate and the inclusion of Hecate as the witches’ patron was a nice touch.
I can’t in good conscience recommend this book, but it wasn’t as offensive as some other works I’ve read, so two stars.

Really sweet, gentle story. Maudlin vibes, themes of found family and recovery from trauma, and a sympathetic if imperfect cast of characters. All in all this read was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Will def read again.
