I enjoyed the way she laid out the evidence and set everything up so it wasn’t predictable or obvious. Our book club had come up with so many theories and at some point everyone was a probable suspect which was refreshing.
Of course there’s always this one clever friend in the book club who predicted out exactly how the murder took place by page 87.
BUT I absolutely HATED the characters, and this may be personal but it made it hard for me to get into the book. I don’t particularly relate to a group of nasty, entitled Oxford students that were self absorbed and terrible to one another. Each to their own. I know it takes a good author to write unlikeable characters and liking characters isn’t always the point.
I know she’s a seasoned author but the first half really dragged on. It was REALLY SLOW. It seemed like she was struggling with setting the stage, the personality of all the main characters and the fluff. Maybe because like she said in the end notes that she never attended Oxford so took the extra time to paint the picture.
I felt like the last 5 chapters of the book was written more effectively and really hooked me in once the suspense started kicking in.
I enjoyed the book enough to not add to my DNF pile, and am open to reading more of her work.
