This wasn't bad to me it was just sooooo basic. From the characters to the plot, it was bland and predictable. No surprises in the plot, I knew how it was going to play out from the very beginning. I hate to say it but the characters bored me, Rory the empathetic, caring serial killer and the "bad boy, shadow daddy" Umbra King that wasn't actually bad at all from the beginning. His whole freaking prison kingdom was a nice place to be that his "prisoners" actually liked more than the kingdom they're free in? Like WHAT?! It was giving kids timeout when they have a TV and game systems and iPads with a mini fridge in their room. Like oh noooos. Again, it wasn't BAD, the world was interesting and I enjoyed that. I just needed something more to make me have any interest in seeing where the story goes from here. 

I wish I didn't feel like this book could have been like 400-500 pages less and been pretty solid. There seemed to be a lot of unnecessary filler in here. It even could have been improved for me had we spent more time with some of the side characters. I would have enjoyed seeing more of some of the little side missions say Mira or Aaric were on. Or more Rhi, Imogen, Garrick, dragons, or even some Ridoc nonesense. Basically a bunch of breaks from the brooding and meandering would have been nice. While the last 200 pages felt much more focused and exciting, I was not super fond of the cliffhanger this time around. Tbh some of it was a bit confusing to me. All in all I did enjoy the book but I would have much preferred quality over quantity. I'm curious as hell to see where things go from here.
