Bear in mind, I don't give 5 star ratings to certain books because I think they're perfect. I give those ratings to those books because they make me feel or think something important to me.

I got a bit of the way into this book with the impression that I disliked the main character because she was so unlikeable.

It turns out, it can be easy to hate people who hate themselves because they want you to hate them, too.

I kept saying "she's such a bad person, I don't know how this can be explained in any way that will make me like her."

And then, I realized I related to her. Maddie's internal dialogue, her fear, her spirals, all reflected experiences I have had. I also have thought I was a bad and unlovable person. I have also pushed people away because I expected them to leave and wanted to beat them to the punch.

In Maddie's character growth, I experienced immense hope that I, too, could be redeemed. And that makes all the difference.
