Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
5.0
A twisting tale, and altogether completely unexpected.
The dark, foreboding plot just keeps giving; mysterious, distant, and sometimes creepy characters; turns and shocks in every chapter; all set in beautiful, eerie scenery. Du Maurier really knows how to weave a web of mystery and tension.
This really does thrill you, more so than I had expected, and it is quietly sinister and dark too. It is a tale of romance, mystery, horror and tragedy all in one, and is overflowing with drama. I think it would appeal to many different audiences and I would recommend this book to anyone as a perfect example of how to create drama in a novel.
Side note: The new Netflix film didn’t quite show the story in the way that I had hoped, it gave it a bit of a “Hollywood makeover” if you like. It also drastically changed the ending, so much so that I watched it with a grimace. However, the rest of it was mostly true to the book, which is more than I can say for many adaptations out there.
